The Druid – Intervista esclusiva in attesa del prossimo album [English & Italian Versions]

The Druid is a mind-expanding experiment involving the combination of stoned doom with raw rock and roll. The Druid was founded by Kaleb Shaffner, Greg Ornella, Max Schmitz, and Louis Eyerman in 2014 in Athens, Ohio and they rock. Oh Yes, they rock! We are waiting for the next album coming soon and after listening the teaser we can hardly wait for having it.

Actually they are: Kaleb Shaffner, guitar and vox, Max Schmitz, Bass and vox, Adam Mayhall, drum kit, Greg Ornella producer.

1. The last time we spoke, just before summer, Greg had just gone to Oregon. How have you spent your summer instead? You played a few festivals? Some interesting gig?

Yes, Greg completed an internship at Flora Recording Studio in Portland this Summer. In the meantime, the Druid was travelling all over Ohio (even taking one venture to West Virginia) trying to establish a good tour circuit. We’re trying to make our tour route even more expansive this Summer, but without a label to back us up, extensive touring can be quite the money pit.

2. The teaser that you put on line did literally kill me. “Medicine Man” is a great title and it seems that your style has evolved incorporating more pronounced psychedelic inflections and blues flavors. One might almost think that Greg has brought a bit, from Oregon, of those weeds, which were joking last time, they have stimulated your creativity. Seriously, can you tell me something about the recording of the new album? If you have already done it and the way the sessions were held (recording studio, drinks, jokes, etc.). Not everything can be as nice as the first song, because if all the album is so amazing I would only listen to your album until the end of the year.

Thanks for the kind words man! We’re really stoked about the new record as well. We already have it all recorded, and it’s in the process of being mixed and mastered at the moment. We’re planning on having Odysseus digitally released sometime within the next three months. The funds produced from the digital release will contribute directly to some physical copies being produced, so help the Druid out if you’d like a CD or Vinyl as well. We believe that this is our most creative endeavor to date, so hopefully, people will be listening to this album until the end of time ;) We pretty much recorded the whole album live, with the band recording in one room at the same time with isolation cabinets for the amplifiers. It makes it a very awesome experience since we still have all of the elements of our live chemistry in the studio. This also makes the studio experience a lot more spontaneous, since we’re able to work through song ideas as soon as we have them in the studio. We probably wouldn’t be able to do this if we weren’t as dedicated to the sound over all, but our priorities are very aligned, so being creative just comes naturally. One of the best stories from this session was how we were able to stay perpetually stoned within our University’s recording studio by using a very nice Volcano Vaporizer and a lot of stealthy maneuvers.

3. The first album and the following EP are excellent works that have had great response in Italy. It seems you missing very little to take flight and now you have a cool record company in Europe, The Nasoni Records in Berlin. Can you dedicate yourself completely to music or you’re forced to do other work, study etc.? What about your influences? Inspirations, etc.?

Thanks man, we would love to be able to come to Italy and share some of the love, but we haven’t received the proper support from a record label yet to be able to take those kinds of ventures. The deal with Nasoni was actually a one-time deal for the release of the debut album on 14″ vinyl. We’re not officially on any label’s roster, but we’re hoping that our increasing popularity on the Internet will help us find some favor with an investor of some kind. At the moment, the three core members of the band are attending University at the same time, so we have to maintain a balance between our music and our studies so we can keep living on campus and making music together. One event that has hugely impacted the music we’ve been writing is the death of Kaleb’s father. This is a subject that has weighed heavily on his mind, and has been a massive source of inspiration for this album. This is to be a living tribute to the man that helped get the Druid on it’s feet and able to share our empathic message with anyone else that needs this music as much as we do.

4. When will the new album? And most importantly, you have already planned his promotion? Maybe with concerts in Europe. Do not forget that you promised me some groupie when you had come to play in Italy (hahahahaha).

We’re planning on having “Odysseus” digitally released sometime within the next three months. The mastering process is always a time consuming one, but we’re sure that the quality of this record will surpass our first record’s due to the intention to detail we’ve maintained throughout the whole ordeal. We’ve been planning shows around Ohio already, but nothing in Europe yet, unfortunately. We really want to go so we can actually get in touch with the majority of our fan base, and hopefully increase it as well. And don’t worry Johnny, we’ll make sure you’re taken care of whenever we meet officially ;)

5. Well guys, I think your music is fantastic and at this point I would be interested to know your strategy to conquer the world, because, believe me, missing very little. I feel like it need just a little effort to be the next big thing.

Thanks Johnny, we really appreciate that man. At this point in time, the thing that would be the most beneficial is the support of any record label that’s willing to put some money into promoting us. If we had the financial support and more channels for promotion, I anticipate that we would be much farther along than we are now. The sound is there and people are responding to it, all we need is someone who is willing to take a risk on investing in the next great American Rock’ n Roll band, because we have the ability and tenacity to make it happen, if given the chance.

VERSIONE ITALIANA

1. L’ultima volta che abbiamo parlato, poco prima dell’estate, Greg era appena andato in Oregon. Come avete trascorso l’estate voi, invece? Avete suonato a qualche festival all’aperto? Qualche concerto interessante?

Sì, Greg ha completato uno stage presso i Flora Recording Studio di Portland questa estate. Nel frattempo, The Druid si son dati da fare in tutto l’Ohio (con uno sconfinamento anche in West Virginia) cercando di consolidare la nostra immagine dal vivo con un bel giro di concerti. Stiamo cercando di ampliare ulteriormente il nostro tour rispetto a quello dell’estate, ma senza la stabilità di una etichetta discografica che ci finanzi, un tour molto lungo, oltre a richiedere ingenti investimenti economici, presenta anche molti elementi di rischio.

2. Il teaser che avete messo on line mi ha ucciso. “Medicine Man” è una grande canzone e sembra che il vostro stile si sia evoluto incorporando più pronunciate inflessioni psichedeliche e sapori blues. Si potrebbe quasi pensare che Greg abbia portato un po’ di erba dall’ Oregon, quell’erba di cui scherzavamo la scorsa volta. Erba che sembra abbia stimolato la vostra creatività. Scherzi a parte, mi potete dire qualcosa riguardo la registrazione del nuovo album? Se l’avete già completato ed il modo in cui si sono tenute le sessioni (studio di registrazione, bevande, barzellette, etc.). Non tutto può essere bello come la prima canzone, perché se tutto l’album è così sorprendente finisce che ascolto solo al vostro album fino alla fine dell’anno.

Grazie amico per le belle parole! Siamo anche noi molto contenti davvero del nuovo album. Abbiamo già registrato il tutto, ed è in procinto di essere mixato e masterizzato al momento. Stiamo pensando di rilasciare “Odysseus” in formato digitale entro i prossimi tre mesi. I fondi ottenuti dalla versione digitale contribuirà direttamente a finanziare la produzione di alcune copie fisiche, in modo da aiutarci a produrre in CD oppure in vinile. Noi crediamo che questo sia il nostro sforzo maggiormente creativo fino ad oggi, almeno così speriamo e che la gente ascolterà questo album fino alla fine dei tempi;) Abbiamo praticamente registrato l’intero album dal vivo, con tutta la band in una stanza con armadi di isolamento per gli amplificatori. Questa attitudine lo ha reso un’esperienza molto impressionante dal momento che siamo riusciti a catturare tutti gli elementi della nostra chimica delle esibizioni dal vivo in studio. Questo rende anche l’esperienza in studio molto più spontanea, dal momento che siamo in grado di lavorare sulle idee di canzoni, non appena le abbiamo. Probabilmente non saremmo stati in grado di farlo se non fossimo stati principalmente dedicati al suono, ma le nostre priorità sono molto allineate e il processo creativo avviene in modo piuttosto naturale. Una delle migliori storie di questa sessione è come siamo stati in grado di rimanere perennemente stonati nello studio di registrazione dell’Università, utilizzando un bel Volcano Vaporizer ed un sacco di manovre di occultamento.

3. Il primo album e il successivo EP sono ottimi lavori che hanno avuto grande risposta in Italia. Sembra che manchi davvero poco per prendere il volo e ora avete una casa discografica molto figa in Europa, Ia Nasoni Records di Berlino. Riuscite a dedicarvi completamente alla musica o siete costretti a fare un altro lavoro, studiare, ecc? Che cosa potete dirmi delle vostre influenze? Ispirazioni, ecc?

Grazie amico, ci piacerebbe essere in grado di venire in Italia a darci un po’ da fare, ma non abbiamo ricevuto il sostegno adeguato da un’etichetta discografica per essere in grado di assumere questo tipo di iniziative. L’accordo con Nasoni era in realtà un affare per un’unica uscita del primo album in 14” in vinile. Non siamo ufficialmente il roster di una etichetta, ma speriamo che la nostra crescente popolarità su Internet ci aiuti a trovare soggetti interessati ad un investimento di questo tipo. Al momento, i tre membri principali della band frequentano l’Università, allo stesso tempo, quindi dobbiamo mantenere un equilibrio tra la nostra musica e i nostri studi in modo che possiamo continuare a vivere nel campus e contemporaneamente fare musica. Un evento che ha enormemente influenzato la musica che abbiamo scritto è stata la morte del padre di Kaleb. Questo è un argomento che ha pesato molto sulla sua mente, ed è stato un enorme fonte di ispirazione per questo album. Questo deve essere un tributo vivente per colui che ha contribuito a far sì che The Druid potessero raggiungere quel consolidamento tale da farcela da soli e vogliamo condividere il nostro messaggio empatico con chiunque altro abbia bisogno di questa musica come piace a noi.

4. Quando sarà il nuovo album? E, soprattutto, avete già pianificato la sua promozione? Magari con concerti in Europa. Non dimenticare che mi avete promesso qualche groupie quando verrete in Italia.

Stiamo pensando di rilasciare “Odysseus digitalmente entro i prossimi tre mesi. Il processo di masterizzazione è sempre un dispendio di tempo, ma siamo sicuri che la qualità di questo disco supererà il precedente a causa dell’estrema attenzione ai dettagli che abbiamo mantenuto per tutta la durata delle registrazioni. Abbiamo in programma spettacoli in Ohio, ma nulla in Europa purtroppo. Vorremmo davvero venire da voi anche per entrare in contatto con la maggior parte della nostra base di fan, e, auspicabilmente, aumentarla. E nNon preoccuparti, ci prenderemo cura di te ogni qualvolta ci incontreremo personalmente.

5. Bene ragazzi, penso che la vostra musica sia fantastica e, a questo punto mi piacerebbe conoscere la vostra strategia per conquistare il mondo, perché, credetemi, manca molto poco. Credo proprio sia necessario un ulteriore piccolo sforzo per divenire the next big thing.

Grazie, l’abbiamo davvero apprezzato amico. A questo punto il maggior vantaggio deriverebbe dallo sforzo finanziario di una casa discografica interessata alla nostra promozione. Se avessimo avuto il sostegno finanziario e goduto della multi canalità per la promozione saremmo, sicuramente, molto più avanti di quanto siamo ora. Il suono è lì e la gente sta rispondendo ad esso, tutti abbiamo bisogno è qualcuno che è disposto a correre il rischio di investire nella prossima grande Rock ‘n Roll band americana, perché abbiamo la capacità e la tenacia di farlo accadere, se solo ci sarà data la possibilità.
