Qui abbiamo una band probabilmente poco conosciuta in Italia, ma che meriterebbe invero una maggiore attenzione presso tutti i consumatori e affetti da dipendenza all’assunzione di massicce dosi di musica heavy-psych.
Originari di East Kilbride, un comune dell’area amministrativa del Lanarkshire meridionale, Scozia (vicino Glasgow praticamente), il gruppo fondato dai fratelli John-Paul e Gary Hughes nel 2011 si è distinto sin dalle prime battute per la forte propensione a accompagnare l’elemento più tipicamente psichedelico con una forte tensione verso sonorità doom e elementi dronici.
‘Gehenna’ (Exag Records) è il loro ottavo ep. In streaming gratuitamente su Bandcamp e edito in edizione limitata in vinile per sole 300 copie numerate, il disco è stato registrato in presa diretta presso due differenti studios, il Green Door di Glasgow e a Strathaven, sempre nel Lanarkshire.
Il disco, se possibile, arricchisce ancora di più il ventaglio di opzioni e di scelte per una band che del resto della varietà e della voglia di sperimentare, ha sempre fatto un proprio cavallo di battaglia. Di più. C’è qualche cosa di epico nel suono delle tre canzoni che compongono l’ep e questo a partire dalla traccia di apertura, ‘In A Sad Red Dusk’, dove mentre la batteria incalza e sembra di udire toni imperiosi di fanfare e su un sottofondo elettrico, spicca il sitar di Graham Gordon. L’effetto è emozionante, sembra di essere sparati dritti all’inferno in una congiuntura spazio-temporale dove presente, passato e futuro diventano una sola cosa.
‘Heavy Black Hole Jets’ piacerà agli appassionati di Wooden Indian Burial Ground oppure Dead Skeletons, peccato solo per la brevità, mentre ‘We’re Gaun Tae The Moon’, summa del sound degli Helicon, ne racchiude probabilmente tutti gli elementi più tipici. L’approccio alla materia psichedelia degli Helicon è ossessivo, abbiamo a che fare con una vera e propria alta frequenza di onde sonore che si alzano imperiose. I toni sono oscuri, la volontà è drammatica, il risultato finale devastante. Siamo già pronti e impazienti per il prossimo giro.

Here it comes a band which it is probably not well known in Italy, but it is evident on the other hand that these guys need to be considered more by everyone who is interested in heavy-psychedelia.
From East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, the band founded by the brothers John-Paul and Gary Hughes in 2011 has always gone on developing psychedelic music heavy influenced by doom elements and drone sounds.
‘Gehenna’, out on Exag Records, is their eight ep. You can listen to it for free on Bandcamp and it is also been released in lymited edition 12” vynil three-hundred handnumbered copies. Recorded live at the Greed Door Studio, Glasgow and at the Old Mill, Strathaven, the ep was then mastered by Frederic Alstadt at Angstrom Studio.
Possibly, ‘Gehenna’ shows far which are actually the faculties and the duties of this combo, which after all it has always been noticed for experimenting in different kind of sounds and genres. There’s something epic in the sound of the three songs which are contained in the ep. You could easily consider it from the beginning and expecially from the first track. ‘In A Sad Red Dusk’. Here we have an impressive and loud sound of drums, like to hear a fanfare of trumpets and then, beyond electricfied noisy guitars, there’s the sitar playing of Graham Gordon. Everything is very impressive. Listening to we have the sensation like we were cleared out to hell and in a meanwhile the present, the past and the future became the same thing.
Who dig listening to Wooden Indian Burial Ground or Dead Skeletons, he will surely enjoy ‘Heavy Black Hole Jets’, while we could surely define ‘We’re Gaun Tae The Moon’ like a ‘summa’ of the sound of this band. Helicon’s sound is really obsessive, giant and acid waves of loud and raging noise sound shatter hard on the rocks. The atmosphere is dark, there’s a dramatic will and the final result it is just devastating. So, here we are, waiting for the next ride to come.
