La Maledizione di Tutankhamon alla fine era solo una trovata pubblicitaria. Di tutti quelli che presero parte alla spedizione archeologica nel 1922 nella Valle dei Re, praticamente nessuno morì in circostanze in qualche modo riconducibili alla profanazione della tomba del sovrano egiziano, dodicesimo faraone della XVIII dinastia egizia. Se escludiamo Lord Carnarvon, il finanziatore, che morì per cause naturali nel febbraio dell’anno successivo a causa di una infezione dovuta alla puntura di insetto, tutti gli altri morirono infatti a distanza di molti anni dal ritrovamento, facendo così cadere questo mito e superstizione. Questo a meno che non si voglia ritenere questa funzionasse come l’antica arte marziale cinese, il ‘Dim Mak’ oppure ‘tocco del veleno’ o anche ‘tocco della morte’. Un’arte proibita dei monaci shaolin ottenuta mediante lo studio dei punti dell’agopuntura e secondo la quale si potrebbero arrecare – pare – gravi danni, malori o addirittura la morte anche a distanza di mesi o anni per cause apparentemente naturali.
A parte tutto questo, rimane comunque immutato il fascino del mito di Tutankhamon e della storia dell’antico Egitto e del Nuovo Regno. Una simbologia e un immaginario che hanno ancora oggi una forte presa e che spingono ognuno di noi inevitabilmente a confrontarci con quella che è la nostra storia, voglio dire, la storia dell’uomo e quelli che costituiscono da sempre i temi centrali esistenziali più tipici: chi siamo, da dove veniamo, dove stiamo andando oppure, che cosa c’è dopo la morte.
Ora chiaramente non ho una risposta a tutte queste domande e forse non ce l’hanno nello specifico neppure questi due ragazzi provenienti dalla Georgia (USA) e che si definiscono come un ‘alien grey psychedelic space rock duo’, anche se questo loro disco d’esordio, intitolato ‘Come With Us’, ci invita in qualche modo a prendere parte a una sessione psichedelica che costituisce di per sé una qualche esperienza mistica e evocativa e che per questo ci riconcilia in qualche modo con la nostra storia passata.
La musica dei Golden Shrines costituisce forse l’ennesimo rimescolamento e rinnovamento di sonorità psych tipicamente sixties, una tipologia di sound che potrebbe probabilmente ricordare due gruppi come gli Allah-Las oppure i The Sufis oppure qualche episodio di Amen Dunes, anche se il loro approccio è probabilmente più garage (‘On the Run’) e l’attitudine maggiormente lo-fi rispetto ai due gruppi citati.
Disco da ascoltare preferibilmente sotto il solleone (‘Under the Sun’, appunto) tipico delle località turistiche nordafricane, oppure all’ombra delle piramidi, allo stesso modo questo, il fatto che questo disco sia stato registrato e concepito da una band made in Usa, fa giustamente venire meno qualsiasi teoria tanto suggestiva quando, rispettosamente poco parlando, poco anzi affatto verosimile come quelle contenute nel libro di Mormon. Abbiamo costruito le piramidi in Egitto, le grandi ziqqurat lungo tutta la Mesopotamia e in quello che oggi chiamiamo Turkmenistan e lo stesso hanno fatto dall’altra parte dell’oceano gli aztechi con i loro grandi templi. Abbiamo costruito e abbiamo distrutto la torre di Babele e la città sommersa di Atlantide. In ogni caso siamo stati noi a fare tutte queste cose. Homo faber fortunae suae est. Abbiamo tutti quanti la stessa storia e questo disco in qualche modo è un’occasione per non dimenticarcelo.

Standing at the curse of the pharaohs it was believed than everyone who disturbs the mummy of an Ancient Egyptian person, especially a pharaoh, he was going to die because he was damned. Of course, this was just a superstition. When in 1922 the Howard Carter’s team discover and opened the tomb of Tutankhamun, launching the modern era of Egyptology, this myth was definitely considered bullshit. Noone definitely dies in fact, except Lord Carnarvon, who was bitten by a mosquito and later died because of blood poisoning. The others who took part to the expedition, they died many years later and if we pretend these deaths related to the Tutankhamun’s curse, we must eventually consider this acting like the concept known as ‘dim mak’ or ‘touch of death’, the martial arts technique reputed to kill using seemingly less than lethal force targeted at specific areas of body and that was supposed to cause delayed death to an opponent.
By the way, the fashination of the myth of Tutankhamun and of the history of the Ancient Egypt it is still relevant. We’re talking about something that still nowadays it convicted everyone of us to relate ourselves to the history of mankind and to the typical aspects of the human thiking and questions like: who we are, where do we come from, where are we going or, eventually, where are going to when we die.
It is evident that I’ve not an answer to these questions and it is the same probably also for these two guys from Georgia (USA), that define themselves like an ‘alien grey psychedelic space rock duo’. At the same time, in their first record, titled ‘Come With Us’, they also invite us to take part to a psychedelic acid session which consists in a mistical experience and for this reason in something that necessearly makes us relate to the past history of the human life.
The music of the Golden Shrines is a mix and renewal of sixities psychedelia, a kind of sound which made me think to two bands I really dig like the Allah-Las or The Sufis. But I also think to some records by Amen Dunes, also if their approach is more garage (listen to ‘On the Run’) and these two guys have got a very strong lo-fi attitude.
You will probably enjoy listening to this record under the big red sun (‘Under the Sun’) of a country of the North Africa and possibly under the shadow of the pyramids and at the same time considering the fact this album was recorded in the Usa, so there’s no reliability on any strange and evocative hypotesis formulated by the book of Mormon. We built the pyramids in Egypt and the big ziqqurats in Mesopotamian and in that country we nowadays call Turkmenistan. On the other part of the ocean, the aztecs they did the same building big and suggestive temples. We built and then destroyed the Babel tower and the lost city of Atlantis. We did. Homo faber fortunae suae est. We everyone share the same history, and this record, why not, it is a good occasion to not forget.
